KeKe Cribbs

KeKe Cribbs - TIQUA

Artist Statement

KeKe Cribbs describes her wide approach to making work as; "I am a painter, a sculptor, a story teller, and most importantly, an "Experimenter" who does not believe rules or fashion trends should dictate what an artist makes. I work intuitively and from the heart. Making things with my hands is in an effort to communicate with others and is the reason I make art. One of my heroines is Louise Bourgoise …. if any one ever tried to tell her what to make, or what material to use, she certainly never listened or allowed current trends to influence her work … that to me is the sign of a real artist."

Using vitreous enamels which are painted onto sheet glass in multiple firings in the kiln, KeKe Cribbs combines ancient techniques with contemporary flare. Inspired by her love of the highly crafted works from antiquity, in part a result of living for many years in Europe, she is equally entranced by the juxtaposition of living in a modern culture.

It is within this balance that Cribbs taps into the delightful expression of humor found in her work, glancing at the absurd while embracing the history of humans and their relationship to beauty as related through art, myth and storytelling.

In the past Cribbs has cut the painted glass sheets into small pieces for mosaic work, reassembling the painted narrative images into mixed media sculptural work. More recently Cribbs has returned to her favored presentation of the painted glass by allowing the work to remain whole and two dimensional.
