Susan Russell Hall - BALANCE

Artist Statement

Art for me is a language of my spirit. As I experience the beauty of this world, the challenges, pain and the joys, my paintings become the pages of my story. I strive to capture the quiet moments of life through art. Nature continues to be the place I go for inspiration and renewal. Some paintings dance on the edge of heaven and earth, others look back to history and time, each reflects a place in eternity.

Art for me is a language of comfort. For 27 years I worked in the operating room as a medical illustrator documenting over 6500 different surgeries from life. Most of the patients were children with congenital heart defects. It was important for me to be present for the patients and families in time of crisis. The drawings were created to help bring a knowledge and understanding of the intricate surgical procedure and to provide support in each difficult situation.

Art for me is a language of quiet reflection. It provides a window or a mirror through which we connect our spirits within and our journey through life.

Art is my visual language, bringing hope, discovery, compassion, and empowerment to the viewer.
First solo show in 1977 at the University of Washington Women’s Cultural Center followed by over 80 group or solo shows.
I have documented over 6500 congenital heart surgeries from life in the operating room, starting in 1979. Illustrations have been
published in more than 30 medical books and journals, and have been used in professional and educational presentations locally,
nationally and internationally.

News and Press

October 2013

Susan Russell Hall has recently been nominated by the International Encaustic Artists organization for the LaVendeene Award for excellence in artistry.  This particular award recognizes outstanding contributions to the advancement and practice of encaustic art.  The Program is named in honor of the fourth century AD female encaustic artist, Laia, whose remains were found, along with the tools of her art, in the La Vendée [la vahn day] region of France. Awards are bestowed in six categories: artistry, education, innovation, lifetime achievement, media and volunteerism. International Encaustic Artists is a non-profit professional artists’ organization that seeks to raise the level of excellence in encaustic fine art by providing global information exchange and raising interest about encaustic in the art world and with the general public.
