Tom Lieber

Artist Statement

My work is centered on human energy.....experiencing, feeling, receiving, expressing.  While in Berkeley California, in the 70's and 80's, I involved myself with different forms of human energetic possibilities......Aikido, Jazz, Psychic Awareness, Wilhelm Reich.  I felt supported in my exploration of these forms for nourishment to paint.  My work has been a rich and fullfilling time for me.

Out there beyond wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field……I'll meet you there.  -Rumi

A coffee table book, Tom Lieber 40 Years, is in production and due out December 2015.  Publisher: CAIE  /  Pasadena, CA

In 1982, Diane Waldman came to San Francisco, on a national search for emerging artists of America, she found Lieber's work illustrated in the back of a catalog of young artists of San Francisco.  She made a studio visit and picked Lieber as one of 12 artists for 'The Exon Emerging American Artists' Exhibition at the Guggenheim.  But as important to Lieber, Waldman shared many great and insightful stories about her experiences with artists Mark Rothko, William deKooning and Joseph Cornell. This exhibition, and the invitation by John Berggruen to join his gallery, were the beginning of Lieber's exposure to the 'Art world' and the continuation of a rich and devoted career of painting.
