Jeff Fontaine - A20

Artist Statement

This series of works on metal focuses on the innate beauty created as manmade objects break down and naturally age. Each work is based on my photography of old signs, rusting train cars and crumbling architecture that is as common to the urban way of life as it is uniquely interesting. Many of the patterns and the imagery in the paintings are taken directly from these documented surfaces. This process that I employ in my paintings is a controlled attempt at replicating and suspending, in my studio, the natural law of entropy and the break down of things.

My current work consists of “quilted” metal panels collaged together, which play on color balance as well as textures, lines and geometrical juxtapositions. The material is salvaged as well as new metal that I manipulate in my studio. The natural process of rusting and pitting are sped up and somewhat controlled to create the desired composition using water, heat and other techniques.
