At the height of this winter season Friesen Gallery will showcase mesmerizing and intricate, large-scale mazes by American artist Leslie Stoner. Living and working on a remote island in the Pacific Northwest, Stoner balances her studio time between encaustic painting and drawing painstakingly elaborate mazes with an actual “Start”, an “End” and a way through with plenty of blocks, twists and turns.
“Working on large birch panels I selectively choose interesting forms in the wood grain and from that create an abstract land or sky scape incorporating a maze,” Stoner says. “I find it easy to lose myself in the process and it’s very meditative for me to spend hours a day in my studio drawing these repetitive, shifting forms. On this scale they may appear as a seemingly impossible journey, much like life, yet each is solvable if you take your time and persevere.”
We welcome you to experience these impressive works that channel a beautiful and timely message of resolve, patience and trust.
